Chickens Feral chickens are everywhere on Kauai. The story is that many Hawaiians raised chickens for food, and perhaps more significantly for cock fighting, and these birds were "freed" by Hurricane Iniki in 1992.

Hanalei Town & Hanalei Bay If you've seen The Descendants then you have seen Hanalei, the St. Regis resort, and the Tahiti Nui bar and restaurant. Or for the older crowd, South Pacific made Hanalei Pier and what Bali Hai famous. Today Hanalei is just a laid-back beach town with very little commercialization, and that is why we love it! |

Na Pali Coast & Kalalau Trail *** We will be scheduling kayak and sailing tours for those who want to join us - more details to follow*** Hike it - the Kalalau Trail is one of the most spectacular hikes in the world! 11 miles each way it is beautiful, strenuous, and dangerous...but the rewards make it worth the effort and risk. Check out the movie A Perfect Getaway for some footage and to freak yourself out a bit :-) Kayak it - with no roads, no overlooks, and no development, the only way to truly appreciate the Napali Coast is either from the water or the air. And a kayak trip brings it up close and personal. Cruise it - for those less adventurous (or just more relaxed), there are terrific sailing tours of the Napali coast. Captain Andy's runs the best known catamaran cruise. |

Ke'e Beach & Tunnels The best snorkeling beaches on Kauai are at the end of the road on the north shore and just a short drive past Hanalei. "Tunnels" (Makua Beach) is so called for the underwater lava caves popular with scuba divers as well as the hollow surf that peels off the outside reef. The reef is huge and can be seen from space - at least that is what I am told. What? Dangerous?? So one little surfer girl got her arm bitten off by a tiger shark there...she's fine now, and famous because of that truly awful movie. Plus that shark is likely long gone! Ke'e is just a bit farther down the road and has a great snorkeling reef as well. There is more parking here, but it gets busy quickly as this is the launching point for anyone hiking the Napali coast on the Kalalau Trail. |
|
Poipu & The South Shore The south shore is more developed, but it is pretty amazing in its own right! There are more resort and condo options here, the selection of restaurants is world class, and the beaches are spectacular! And although it doesn't matter as much in the summer months, the weather is more consistent on this side.

Helicopter Tours Helicopter tours have never been something I was crazy about, but if you are ever going to take a ride in one, Kauai is the place! With so much of the island either private (Jurassic Park waterfalls) or remote (Napali Coast), a helicopter is the best and most spectacular way to see it all. We chose the 4 seat, no doors, Hughes 500 helicopter from Jack Harter Helicopters - think TC from Magnum PI :) It is pricey at around $250 per person for an hour long tour, but it is a great way to get introduced to the island and something you will never forget. |
